Book Review: When Blood Calls by J.K. Beck

When I won this ARC in a contest I was torn about whether to read this book or hand it off to my husband, another rabid Beck fan. Why? Because I felt that I had burned out on vampires, that I just couldn’t handle yet another Great Vampire Novel with yet another author’s take on the sexy monsters that we’ve all come to know and love. Not without a few stiff drinks in me anyway.

Unfortunately for my husband I picked up the ARC and didn’t put it down until I’d finished the entire book. And by “put it down”, I mean the battered copy went with me to the kitchen, the bathroom, the bedroom (sorry honey!) and back to the living room where it bumped all my other books and laptop to the side.

And, man… was it worth it!

“When Blood Calls” is the first in a three-book series (although I’m hoping for more!) dealing with Sara Constantine, a lawyer who gets a sudden promotion to a new department – her cover story is that it’s Homeland Security but it’s much, much more than just that.

Here’s the blurb from the back cover to give you a taste of what’s going on:

Sara Constantine is one of the country’s most tenacious prosecuting attorneys—and she’s just secured a well-earned promotion. At first she’s thrilled. Then she finds out her new job involves prosecuting vampires and werewolves. And nothing prepares Sara for the shock she receives when she meets the first defendant she’ll be trying to put away: Lucius Dragos, the sexy stranger with whom she recently shared an explosive night of ecstasy.

When Lucius Dragos kisses the beautiful woman sitting next to him at the bar, he’s only hoping to blend into the crowd and avoid the perceptive gaze of the man he’s following…and planning to kill. But what starts as a simple kiss to secure his cover ignites into a fierce hunger that leads to an all-consuming passion. Charged with murder, Luke knows Sara will do whatever it takes to see him locked away—unless he can convince her that he’s not the monster she thinks he is. And that might mean making the greatest sacrifice a vampire can make.

“Get ready, Sara. You’re about to go down the rabbit hole.”

–District Attorney Alexander Porter to Sara Constantine

Imagine a paranormal “Law & Order” with vampires, werewolves, demons, trolls and goblins running rampant under our noses- but all of them living under a legal system that parallels our own, up to and including execution for serious crimes, such as killing humans. And who gets to prosecute these paranormal creatures? Lucky lawyers like Sara Constantine who is tossed into a dangerous new world and has to find her footing fast or be swept away by both her passions and her desire for justice.

I’m glad the other two books are coming out soon or I’d have to consider some serious stalking of J.K. Beck. Really. Making me wait a year or more would be a Bad Thing, I’m just saying.

So for those of you looking for a new series and something that’s going to keep you up at night in a variety of ways, get thee hence to the bookstore and grab a copy of “When Blood Calls”. And when you finish, get the other two copies. And then start a writing campaign to get more books in this wonderful new world that Beck’s created!
